Darkroom Foundations Workshop

Step into the darkroom and learn the foundational skills of black & white film development and darkroom printing in a relaxing and supportive environment.

This workshop is suited to beginners, those keen for a refresh, and anyone with exposed black & white film who want a clear, guided introduction to analogue darkroom photography. The Darkroom Foundations Workshop runs most Saturdays from 10:00am - 3:00pm. Pre-booking is essential, as most workshops book out 2-3 weeks in advance.

Workshop Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand how variables such as ISO, temperature, agitation and chemical choice affect film development times

  • Assemble and use components involved in analogue film development such as film reels and development tanks

  • Handle photographic chemicals safely, prepare film developer and practice proper disposal protocols

  • Produce a correctly exposed test print and interpret the results in order to determine final exposure time

  • Handle photographic chemicals safely, prepare film developer and practice proper disposal protocols

  • Evaluate developed negatives for contrast, density and detail as well as identify which negatives are best suited for enlargement

  • Evaluate a finished print for correct exposure and contrast and identify improvements for reprinting

  • Load and handle darkroom papers into easels to achieve consistent and even photographic borders

  • Identify darkroom equipment and apply each component to a black and white printing workflow
